It is our goal to engage as many people in philanthropy as we can. We define our practice of “guerilla philanthropy” as the identification of needs and contributing to filling those needs through grassroots events, activities or initiatives constructed quickly, strategically and at low- or no cost.

Historically, the definition of philanthropy has evolved across eras and because of several champions. Interestingly enough, the word “philanthropy” was first made reference to in the mythological story of Prometheus, a Titan god whose name meant forethought. When humankind was first created, they had no knowledge, culture or skills and lived in fear. Defying Zeus’ plan to destroy them, Prometheus decided to give them two things to enhance the quality of their lives: fire (passion) and blind optimism (faith). Because of his persistent defiance and love for humans, Prometheus was chained to a mountain called Caucasus, where his liver (others say it was his heart) was devoured by an eagle and would heal and regenerate on its own. This torment continued everyday until he was said to be granted sovereignty by Zeus.

Because this story spoke of improving the humaneness of humanity and of rebellion against tyranny, philanthropy further characterized later on to associate with freedom and democracy.

This meant a lot to us because it negated the popular notion that philanthropy, as defined in the United States, is solely distinguished by two main activities: donating time and donating money. It meant that citizens like us, have a responsibility to take a look at what public services do not address and fill in those societal gaps with our concerted private initiatives and translate those into good for humankind. Many of these gaps, sadly neglect under-represented communities like those of poverty and of color.

“Guerilla philanthropy” requires us to dig deeper and address unpopular issues that do not get the much needed care. This translates into educating people about these causes, allowing easy participation in their advocacy and ultimately providing answers and solutions, to supplement our government’s work.

Additionally, something that marks Bay Area Benefit is its natural capacity to respond to disaster relief initiatives in record time, proving that many people, irrespective of personal wealth and flexibility of time, want to contribute. It’s just a matter of ‘how.’

Therefore, through education and participation, we are here to tell you that – whether you know it yet or not – when you engage, you already are, a philanthropist.
